This week’s entry: A Kitten and a grave
A kitten jumps up on a grave. He scratches the stone. He licks his paw.
Why are we here? He thinks. Why are we back?
”Can you hear it?” His momma says with her fingers deep inside the dirt. “His voice! It is there. He is screams for us!”
His papa falls to his knees beside her. “Are you sure? Is he alive?”
“It must be him! Who else could be screaming from his grave?”
The kitten jumps down beside them. Maybe he can understand if he digs too?
His papa shoves him to the side, and the kitten rolls into the next grave.
The kitten scans his family digging up the grave they just months ago filled.
Why? He asks.
He dodges two boots running between the stones.
“My little cowgirl!” A woman says and embraces her dirty daughter.
“Mom,” the daughter says. “Mom, look. I am not bleeding. Not anymore.”
The kitten jumps back to his papa. He stands on the shoulders. He looks down the hole.
Nails break as a casket is forced open. No tear falls in pain.
The kitten looks down at the body. He jumps down and licks the face. He rolls of the body as mama and papa lifts it up.
Tears fall. Just as they did so many months ago.
“He is in heaven,” papa says. “Listen to me, he is in heaven.”
A kitten scans them curiously. He decides to not understand.
A hand arises from below. It grabs the kitten’s neck. The neck cracks as the mama and papa mourns their dead child.
“Spoiled brats,” the man from below mumbles. “Never even came to visit once.”
