Welcome to Flashes of Sanity! Your daily dose of flash fiction on 500 words or less.

Today’s entry: View of a Battle

Enjoy!

The dragon was a surprise. A little bit too much of a surprise. A warm pants surprise.
When you are above tree level warm pants go cold awfully fast.
But a dragon flying towards you kind of trumps that. At any given day.
Donny pushed all the buttons at the same time hoping that one of them would turn his small aircraft away from the fire breathing monstrosity approaching from the horizon.
It actually succeeded.
The dragon rolled mid-air, though, and ended up in Donny’s path again.
The beam of fire leaving the dragon’s mouth hit Donny’s arm. The fire also swallowed Brutal Joe and Cat-scratch.
They all fell to the street with the dragon passing above them. The dragon rolled again. It tackled Car-scratch of his chair.
At least I get to meet Bella again, Donny thought. He crossed his arms over his chest, prepared for the death to come.
In the city, the dragon roared as it threw itself at a screeching red monster. The explosions burned so bright everything turned white under Donny’s eyelids. A shadow blackened the sun, and Donny’s ears turned the world into sirens as the large body crushed the ground.
Donny took one final breath.
His back hit the asphalt. His skull splattered across the pavement. Everything turned white. Then black.
And Donny took another breath.
