”Okay,” Nick said and wandered on and of between the curved walls. “We need something new. Something that makes our dynasty magnificent. Something extraordinary.”
“Hit me!”
“The red will come.”
Nick facepalmed with a sigh. “Mark, could you sow Tim’s mouth shut before we continue.”
“I could crush his jaw for you if that suits you better?” A muscular man said as he approached from the shadows.
“No, only sowing and don’t pretend you don’t know how to do it. I have seen the mittens you do when no one is watching.”
The muscles grumbled, but a needle magically appeared from his pocket.
“They are beautiful by the way.”
The grumbles stopped. The back got straighter, and shouts of pain from an annoyance turned to mumbles.
“Now.” Nick said from his throne and spread his fingers. “Madeleine as my PR advisor what do you think?”
“We should put out posters with invitation to join you in this war.”
“I like the way you think, Madeleine. The printers are down, though. What about writing with the blood of our enemies?”
The court agreed to the inquiry with exception for Piotr, but he was smart enough to remain silent when threatened to have his mouth sowed shut too.
“Our next point, what should our next target be? We got the city. It is only suitable to go longer.”
“How about going west to the coast,” Blaine, financial shark, said. “They have casinos.”
“No, too small. We need to prove that we are here to remain.”
“Why don’t you go for the presidency then?”
Nick froze in his chair. “That sounds scary.” He tasted the words. “I love it! Bjoern! I knew you would pay off, but this quick. You really are full of surprises.”
Nick snapped his fingers. Two grunts appeared.
“Please, go up and find some enemies for blood. I need you to write ‘Vote for Gift-box’ at every street corner.”
‘But I can’t spell,” one of the men objected.
“Those left can’t read either so everything evens out.” Nick returned to his court. “I feel like celebrating. Mark! Open the bottles in the back, and when you’re at it free Tim’s mouth. We are having a party for the centuries.”

Today’s entry: Court of Heads

”IT WAS FORETOLD!”
Nick sighed. ”Can you please shut it for just a minute? Just one bloody minute!” He splashed water at the head. The head swallowed the water just so it could pour out down its throat.
”I have other things on my mind right now, Tim.”
The skull floating in the sewer water slowly traveled closer to him. patches of skin was still attached to it. Nick stretched a stick after it.
”So, Gift-Box, what is your plan really?”
Nick missed the skull. He sighed again.
”My plan with what Bjoern?”
”With you criminal empire, of course.”
”Owning everything, and everyone. What else would it be?”
”FIRST THERE WAS THE WINGED BEASTS AND THEIR HORNED SLAVES. THAT WAS THE FIRST INVASION. MANKIND GAVE UP THE ECOSYSTEM OF THEIR SOULS FOR KNOWLEDGE.”
”I said, shut it, Tim!” Nick threw a boot at the head. The head didn’t notice.
”THEN THERE WAS THE GREEN! THAT WAS THE SECOND INVASION. BY MELDING WITH MANKIND IT CREATED A NEW MAN OF THE WOODS.”
Nick stretched for the skull in the waters. The stick caught it in the brain.
“THEN THERE WAS THE GREEN. ANGERED BY THE KILLING OF THEIR CHILDREN, THEY RETURNED WITH REVENGE IN THEIR HEARTS.”
Nick lifted the head so they were eye to eye. The jaw hang by strands of tissue. It moved in what once was breaths.
“Who do we have hear?”
“I will kill you all!” The skull said. “I Sam Adamson will get my revenge. I will destroy everything you love. When I am done there won’t be anything left!”
Nick giggled. “Did you hear that Bjoern? He will kill us all. You know what Sam? You will do nicely among my court. Let me introduce you to you equals.”
“THE FOURTH INVASION BEGAN WHEN THE ECOSYSTEM OF MAN’S SOULS WAS DISRUPTED,” the head of Tim shouted. “SOON, THE RED WILL COME!”
“Shut up Tim! Don’t scare out new employee on the first day!”
Nick turned the skull of Sam to each of his heads. He introduced them. Then Sam got a place next to Tim.
And they shouted gibberish all day and all night long.

Flashes of Sanity #135: Job Interview

Welcome to Flashes of Sanity! Your daily dose of flash fiction on 500 words or less.

Today’s entry: Job Interview

Enjoy!

“Welcome to my home.”
The world around Bjoern blurred itself back into existence. He was still in the sewers. It was just decorated to look like a family home.
“Chop, chop, eyes on me, okay?”
Bjoern turned towards the man on what once was a kitchen chair. Arm rests and ornaments had been attached to make it into a throne.
“Who are you?” Bjoern’s thoughts grasped at the memories of the morning. He went to meet Gift-Box. He saw an undead Santa. Two elves chased him down the sewer. Then black. He looked at his shirt. The buttons were untouched. He was still recording.
“Me,” the man said. “I am Nick. Gift-Box. A family man. Or was until the bastard over there took them away.”
The man pointed at the wall behind him. A wall covered in heads, Bjoern now realized. 15 heads to be exact. They all moved.
“You are Gift-Box, and you have living heads on your wall.” He made sure to articulate the words. All the questions Bjoern had prepared for the meeting seemed irrelevant now.
This was so much better.
“Yes.” Nick turned to the heads. “They are my court of heads.”
“I will kill you!” One head said.
“You say so all the time Piotr, it is getting tedious. Can’t you just get over the fact that I killed you. I promise, I might try to get over that you slaughtered my family. Just for some freaking stones.”
“Why do you have them on a wall?”
“They are my advisors. Or most of them are. Piotr is for decoration.”
“Advisors for what?”
Nick tilted his head and gave Bjoern a weird look.
“For my next move, off course. Madeleine said we needed someone to document all I have accomplished, so, here you are!”
“The world will turn red!” One of the heads said. “The end has just begun. Magalago said so. What Magalago said is the law.”
“Sorry,” Nick turned to the head and smacked it. “That was Timothy Galan, he read the great journal of Magalago and claims he knows all that was and all that will be. The world translated that as over his head crazy. But I think there might be something to it.”
“The man in red has attacked. That initiates phase 1. Soon the red will come.
This time Nick punched Timothy’s head with his full force. “Do you want me to dip you in poop? No? Then, shut up.”
“Once again, sorry. Heads can be so unpredictable,” Nick continued as if nothing had happened.
“What do you want with me?” Bjoern asked with his eyes still on the fifteen heads.
“I want you to join my court of heads.”
Bjoerns heart froze. “What if I don’t want to?”
Nick tilted his head. “Do you think you have a choice?”
Nick snapped his fingers. Everything turned dark. Pain struck through Bjoern’s neck. He screamed, a lungless scream.
“Welcome to my court,” Nick said.
